A GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR LIBERIANS
A major turning point in the ongoing Liberian crisis unfolds with the arrival of the West African military experts in Monrovia on Monday. The team led by Brigadier General Festu Okonkwo patrolled the city centers and the Bushrod Island to assess the situation in those areas Thursday amidst jubilation from war-wearied crowd.

GROUP SHELLING MONROVIA IDENTIFIED AS LURD GIVES TO THE PEOPLE
July 30...There are credible reports that mortar shells falling in Monrovia, especially in the diplomatic enclave of Mamba Point were not fired by LURD rebels, but forces loyal to embattled Liberian leader Charles Taylor, who said the United States has " blood on its hand for supporting the LURD rebels."

Reverend Dr. Walter D. Richards Preaches Religious Intolerance in the "New Liberia"
While it is true that most Liberians and friends of Liberia are weary of the continuous degradation of our country as the result of our own perpetrated vices, the fact remains that some are yet to see reason for us to come together, compromise our various differences, and advance national interest rather than personal ones.

Some of these people who are very intolerant of others are still campaigning to advance their old age failed ideologies into the popularly anticipated "Emancipated" Liberia. These people, such as Dr. Walter Richards, still hold that either their way or no way. They maintain that the "New Liberia" must be as they have anticipated, or no Liberia. (Continue)

ULAA denounces and condemns the violation of the cease-fire
Press Release....It is extremely disheartening that the Taylor Government, LURD, and MODEL have decided to escalate the violence while peace talks are under way in Ghana. The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas, ULAA therefore denounces and condemns the violation of the cease-fire by the Government of Liberia, LURD, and MODEL. ULAA further denounces the exchange of artillery and heavy weaponry by both the LURD and forces loyal to the Taylor Government in the densely populated city of Monrovia. These reckless acts by both LURD and the Government have led to the unwarranted death of many Liberians, including the massive destruction of properties.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
The Union of Liberian Association in the Americas, ULAA, in collaborations with other organizations, is hereby inviting all Liberians, friends of Liberia, and members of the general public to the second Liberian Solidarity Day Rally on Wednesday, August 13, 2003. This rally will be held in front of the White House.

PLENTY SENSE(Open Letter to Alhaji Kromah)
After hearing that you are seriously contesting to be the interim president, I was surprised because I have always considered you to be a very intelligent man who holds the Liberian people’s interest at heart. I strongly feel that your decision to seek the interim presidency is not wise because of your past role as a factional leader.

We are defending our positions, says LURD

Monrovia, July 29...LURDs claimed today that they are defending their positions and two such positions are the strategic town of Gbanga and the port area of Monrovia as fighting continues between Taylor's troops and LURD. "We are counter attacking Taylor's boys around the two bridges, because we do not want those criminal coming into our areas. We will give the port area to the peacekeeping force when they arrive." General Donzo said.

There are reports that areas under LURD are much better than the Taylor's controlled areas. One example is, the price of rice is now 75 Liberian dollars in Taylor's towns, but 15 Liberians dollars in LURD's town. A displaced 62 years old man from Brewerville, told LIMANY that he does not want for LURD to leave. "They give us food and small small things. They do not trouble us, but if they leave the other people will come and take the little we have, bed our wives and children."

In the meanwhile, MODEL capture of Buchanan has cause panic in Harbel. The people are packing their loads heading towards Monrovia. There are reports that fighting is going around Harbel and many of Taylor's unpaid fighters are joining MODEL.  MODEL says within three days they should be in control of Liberia's international airport.

In a related story, Taylor's army is running low on fuel, the number of abandon government's cars on the road has increased. General Yeatent said that they can not continue like this. "We are just buying time so that the international community can rescue us. If we go like this, we will end up surrendering."

Which direction to go, a total confusion in Buchanan, Bassa?

Monday, July 28...A Liberian rebel faction, MODEL, attacked the port of Buchanan this morning, said Chea. The are reports of heavy fighting going on in the city. Model's agent in Monrovia said that they have no intention of entering Monrovia. "We just want to deny Taylor for re-arming himself from his Godpa in Libya."

The people in Buchanan have taken into the bushes, crying for help. In the city, there are reports of looting by retreating Taylor's fighters. People are confused as where to go. They are fighting everywhere. The are reports coming in that LURD is positioned to seize Gbanga and Kakata. In Ganta, there are conflicting reports as to who controls what. We are still waiting for more information from Ganta," said a source.

Liberian rebels push across key bridge towards Monrovia's airport (ABC)
Advancing Liberian rebels have pushed across a key bridge north of the capital Monrovia as the US ambassador said President Charles Taylor had agreed to honor a buffer zone further north.

Hail of shells batters Monrovia on Liberia's independence day... ABC Online  Sat Jul 26
Liberia's independence day has begun with a downpour of mortar shells at battle sites around Monrovia's key bridges, as President Charles Taylor was due to address thousands of war-battered displaced civilians.

Mr Taylor was expected to make an afternoon address to the roughly 30,000 people who have fled the capital's raging combat to hole up in the sprawling Samuel Kanyon Doe sports stadium.

Civilians die in Liberia church blast
A mortar has exploded in a church filled with refugees in the Liberian capital Monrovia, killing at least three people and wounding many more. The mortar crashed through the roof, landing in the middle of the building.

The attack came despite a ceasefire declared by the rebels on Friday, shortly after the United States said it was sending a troop-carrying ship to the Liberian coast.

AMERICA HAS MORAL OBLIGATION TO SAVE LIBERIA…Say Liberians at Friday Peace Rally

Liberians believe the United States has a moral obligation to save their country that has been crippled by nearly 14 years of almost non-stop bloody civil war. A country founded by freed American slaves on Friday witnessed one of the bloodiest escalation in the seesaw battle for the capital, Monrovia, when mortar shell struck and killed eight people at the Newport Junior high school.

Wearied of continued bloodshed by rebels and pro-Taylor government forces, hundreds of Liberians residing in the Delaware valley, including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Trenton, New Jersey simoustaneoulsy held peace rallies in their various cities. Emmanuel Crusoe, president of the Liberian community association in Trenton said they called on the international community to "move fast and save our people lives in Liberia." (Continue)

PHILLY PEACE RALLY TURNS DRAMATIC

The Philadelphia peace rally turned dramatic midway into the program. It all started when Ms. Marcia, former 'Miss Liberia' took the stand to make a statement on behalf of the organizers of the Miss Liberia beauty pageant. She tried to justify the importance of hosting the pageant in the wake of the current catastrophe in Liberia.

" The pageant is necessary in order for us to generate funds to help our people back home." Her statement sparked serious jeers roaring from the crowd, most of them women and children. As Marcia tried to send her message across, the crowd continued to boo and asked her to leave the stage.

US sends warships to Liberia
US President George W Bush has ordered American warships to deploy off the coast of Liberia, leading to the announcement of a rebel ceasefire. Rebel commanders say they have instructed their front line commanders only to defend themselves whilst holding their positions.

MORE BLOODBATHS IN MONROVIA ON THE EVE OF "LIBERIA's 157th INDEPENDENCE DAY"

BBC .... The centre of the Liberian capital, Monrovia, has come under fierce bombardment on the seventh day of fighting.

Eight refugees died as several shells hit Newport High School, where hundreds of people were sheltering, early on Friday morning.

NO INDEPENDENCE FOR US TO CELEBRATE, Says Nimba Association of New York
July 24....
The Nimba Association of New York, NANY is concerned about the continuous hostilities in Liberia, which continue to claim the lives of innocent Liberians, and leaving the population homeless. We are supportive of all efforts aimed at ending this madness and appeal to the US Government to intervene immediately. NANY is also condemning in the strongest possible terms, the killings of people, and the destruction of Liberia.

We are pleading to all Liberians and friends of Liberia to please use July 26 as a day to fast and pray, to bring an end to the suffering, and killing of our people. We are pleading to the organizers of the IE and Barrole Game to find reason to cancel all festivities of July 26th Celebration, so that we can collectively focus on all victims of this senseless war. Our people, most especially our children are in pain and are in tears. This is not time for merry. Our freedom and independence is not in our hands, but instead in the hands of warlords and Taylor. There is no INDEPENDENCE for us to celebrate.

Halt the Barrolle vs. IE soccer match On July 26th
Talata Sheriff, jULY 24....Fellow compatriots (Liberians) while it is true that we all have made great plans for the coming July 26th events, it is also true that our country is at the moment been destroyed, our people are dying by the minute and MAMA Liberia is crying for help. So it will be insane for any rational man to go out playing soccer, hosting beauty pageant, going to parties and having fun instead of praying for our Country and our people who continue to suffer and die at the hands of those killers. If we went out to celebrate the 26th, what will the international community take us for? What is the essence of these activities at this gloomy time in the history of our country (Liberia)?

In view of the aforementioned, I suggest that all Liberians come together in what ever country they are residing in around the would to pray for peace, Mama Liberia and for our people whose lives are not consider by the guns carrying kids and their leaders. I hope every Liberian understands what I mean and do those things that will bring peace to LIBERIA.

As a young Liberian my heart bleeds when I see on TV the level destructions that Is presently taking place in Liberia. There is no indications what so ever of an end to the madness, the killings, the robberies, the rapes, and the destruction of properties. That saddens my heart.

As I close I am once again asking all Liberians to put a stop to all and every social activities of the July 26th celebration.

Press Release:UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IN PENNSYLVANIA Says no to 26th Celebration
July 24.....The University of Liberia Alumni Association In Pennsylvania has canceled its July 26 celebrations in Philadelphia and is calling for sustained massive campaign by all Liberians in the United States to pressure the International community especially the American Government to intervene in order to stop the bloodbath.

At an emergency meeting Wednesday night, the officers said we cannot be mourning and celebrating at the same time, especially when mortal shells are falling on our people, killing and wounding them in their hundreds and corpses of loved ones are being piled up in our nation's capital.

Liberians Gift to Liberia This July 26
July 1, 2003....This July 26th, Liberia will be celebrating her 157th year of Independence. What has she to show for it? And moreover, what is your Gift to your Mother on Her Birthday?

Instead of the various 'pageantry' and  'pomp and circumstance', around the United States of America this year to celebrate our Independence Day, we should make this a very special day for all Liberians. It is about time we forego all these celebrations for our presences in Washington, D.C. "en masse". Making a statement of such nature on a day most dear to our motherland is next to the best Sacrifice we can do for the moment. Instead of getting that suit or buying that African attire, rally those around you and your local Liberians community leaders to a bus trip to this Nation's Capital to appeal to the Power that Be for some action in our Beloved Land.

I believe that we should protest at the White House, and if possible ask of an audience with the President of The United States of America. Look, my fellow Liberians, If we are not willing to make the sacrifices that are important for our Dear Land, no one and I mean, No One, will be willing to do it for us. It is about time we let go of the celebrations around this country and come together, as LIBERIANS, Strong and United to confront the nightmare of Liberia today.

MORE LIBERIANS DECRY JULY 26TH CELEBRATIONS
…Say Organizers are 'heartless and unpatriotic people'

July 23, 2003....
Liberia continues to bleed in the face of its 157th anniversary on Saturday on July 26th. Rebels forces continue to battle pro-Taylor militias in the capital, Monrovia. Thousands have been made homeless. There are reports that 600 innocent civilians have been killed. Humanitarian disaster looms as hunger and diseases have become the silent killers of the day.

As usual, Liberians from all walks of life would converge at one place to celebrate events marking July 26th independence. The events are usually marked with festivities including a traditional soccer encounter between two of Liberia's archrivals, Invincible Eleven and Mighty Barrolle. However, there has been public outcry against the hosting of these events this year due to current events unfolding in Liberia.

LIBERIANS FROWN ON JULY 26TH CELEBRATIONS

Sidiki Trawally...Sekou Korleh, acting chairman of the Association of Liberian Youths in Pennsylvania, objected the idea of hosting the July 26th event. " Our people are crying. Our people are dying by the day and minutes. It would be unfair to celebrate here while our people are suffering. Cancellation is in our best interest."

Several interviewees also expressed the same concerns. " Liberians must be out of their mind to celebrate at this time," a Liberian in Silver Spring, Maryland, who wants to remain anonymous, said. He said: " all we do on this day is drink lot of beers, hang out with friends, that's all. Nothing serious we do anyway, so I want all Liberians to remain home and pray for our country, which is bleeding right now." More

LURD points the finger at Taylor's forces for the shelling of centre Monrovia
July 21...LIMANY is concerned about the latest violence in Liberia, most especially the shelling of the over populated areas of Monrovia. Today, LIMANY engaged the LURD's leadership to cease-fire and stop the shelling of innocent civilians.

In response, LURD Field Commander, General Donzo have this to say: "We are not the one that you need to talk to about ceasing fire, Taylor dirty rats are the ones provoking us. We have made all efforts to avoid the city center, but Taylor's undisciplined children continue to shell the city and putting the blame on us. We have no reason to shell the city center, we have the port area and we are waiting for peacekeepers to come. We know of intelligent reports that Taylor plans to attack the US Embassy compound, we even know that he is planning to kill some peacekeepers. The man is a liar, coward, devil and an indicted criminal. He is using our people as human shields. If he is man, then let him meet us on his farm. As we were retreating from Tucker's Bridge last night, his men started attacking us from the back. We are chasing those that are shelling the city center. Our disciplined fighters have recognized Taylor's behavior as a plot against our operation to free Liberia of Taylor.

"LIMANY, why will we decide to shell the US compound? You Liberians should think. We have no problem with the Americans. It is indicted criminal Taylor who has problem with the Americans and the international community." Donzo said.

Charles Taylor has been reduced to "just defending two bridges" says a West African Diplomat
July 20.....As the battle of Liberia's capital rages on, the most fearful rebel leader in West Africa, continues to show that he is human after all.

Rebels pushed further Sunday into Liberia's capital, where they exchanged blows for blows with Taylor's child-soldiers for control of two key bridges (1,2) leading to the city center. Rebels now control the port area (3) and the fighting has sent tens of thousands of panic residents toward the diplomatic area (4)

A LIMANY's reporter in the center of town reported that Ex-President Charles Taylor lost several hundreds child-fighters that were killed on both bridges. Earlier, Taylor's spokesman Varney Passawe had this to say: "The bridges are being well defended and our children are defending them with their lives."

Taylor referred to himself as the best rebel among all African rebels. But today it appears that he is being chased out of town by his own invention, the rebel game. Resource personnel from the LURD organization, revealed that 45% of LURD fighters are former Taylor's fighters, many of them out to get him. Former NPFL fighter known as James, says: "Papaye trained me well, and over used me well, but refused to feed and pay me."

What did LURD pay you to fight for them? "Me and many of my other pepkins are using LURD to dirt Taylor for good. When Taylor is dirted, we will disarm immediately.

According to a diplomat in Monrovia who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the most fearful rebel in West Africa has been reduced to just defending two bridges. "I hope that his commanders would find reasons to move on without him." Said the diplomat.

Taylor, Minister Chea, and Pro-militias are using human-shield for their defense?
July 20...The warlord-turned-president vowed to "fight street-to-street, house-to-house" until the rebels are defeated. "I will never desert the city, I will never desert my people," he told The Associated Press. "I will stand and fight to the last man until they stop killing my own people."

Sources report that Taylor bad boys are disappearing into the crow, carrying their killing equipments (AK-47) in bags and suitcases. One reliable ATU officer revealed to LIMANY that Taylor and Chea are both dressing like women these days and trying to mix with the victimized citizens. On two occasions Taylor has tried to take rescue into the Nigeria Embassy. His bad boys say they will blow the Nigerian Embassy up if he enters. There are plans to take him in there once the Embassy is protected by Nigerian army.

Meanwhile, thousands of residents streamed through the streets of a neighborhood housing diplomatic compounds seeking shelter behind their gates.

Again, LURD agrees to withdraw from Monrovia
July 20...After reaching the key Gabriel Tucker bridge, which stands at the threshold of the center of a city, where hundreds of people were killed in the two LURD's assaults last month, LURD has agreed to halt the fighting and withdraw.

"We are asking the peacekeepers headed by the US to come now and move this indicted criminal from Liberia. Secondly, if Taylor continues to attack our position, we will hit back. For the love of our people and peace in Liberia, we will stop here, and wait for the peacekeepers." Said Commander Conneh.

Sources report that there are wide spread looting by unruly Taylor fighters in a city with little left to lose. Taylor's gun totting child soldiers are more focused on pay themselves than fighting rebels.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Taylor has been cornered by his fighters. One diploma said that Taylor is a hostage and his generals believe that they can continue to get money from him as long as he is in the country.

There are also reports that US-based Nimbains are calling on their fighters to go against Taylor. One Nimbain from North Carolina said that the time is right to do all Liberians a favor by ending Taylor's madness.

Liberian Rebel Troops Enter Monrovia
Military sources say the rebels gained control Saturday, of Monrovia's port area in new clashes that sent tens of thousands of residents fleeing to the center of the city seeking shelter. Many troops also retreated toward the downtown area as artillery and heavy machine gun fire intensified.
