Our Mission
The Liberian Mandingo Association of New York (LIMANY)
seeks to:
- build mutual support networks among its members
- promote unity among all Liberians
- communicate and work with other Liberian organizations for peace,
democracy, reconciliation, and reconstruction
- ensure that human rights are protected under Liberian laws and
that no group of Liberians is prosecuted or killed on the basis
of religion and ethnicity
- ensure that all Liberian children receive an education
History
The idea for LIMANY was around long before it establishment
as Mandingo Association. On this darkest day of Liberian history,
1990, all the Liberian Mandingoes in New York City assembled at
Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Turay's residence, after seeing the brutal
and barbaric killing of a Liberian woman and her child. The reason
given by the murdered was that the woman and her child were Mandingoes
and Moslems as reported by BBC.
The need for organizing ourselves and consoling each other could
not be over emphasized. And this was the birth of the Liberian Mandingo
people organization, called the Mandingo Association, chaired by
Mr. Abraham Turay. A year after its founding, Mandingo Association
elected its first elected President, Mr. Bangalee Fofana.
Over the years the membership has grown, and has been able to refine
its focus as stated in our mission statement. We are now and shall
forever be known as the Liberian Mandingo Association of New
York (LIMANY)
Sources of Funding
LIMANY's work is financed entirely by the generous
due payments from its registrar members. LIMANY often stages fundraising
programs to generate needed funds.
LIMANY is working on obtaining its 501(c)(3) US Federal tax exempt
status, at which time we will encourage public funding.
