My Visit To Ganta on Thursday (May 1), Ganta's Market Day
By Masogbeh Kenneh
April 29, 2003

In Ganta, people were moving about their businesses as normally as they could. Many people I talked to told me that they wish the fighting would stop. Ganta was not as damaged as earlier claimed - some buildings are slightly damaged. On the street, there are fearful and armed men patrolling, looking as if they were ready to attack.

Zaza Reponds to LURD's Conneh

I read with total amazement a publication on the Website of the Perspective Magazine (April 30, 2003) captioned "LURD Makes Appointments". That publication purporting to emanate from you carried a statement from the "LURD Secretariat" appointing me as "Coordinator II (USA)". Whatever that title meant, I do not know.
Your leadership of LURD, through utterances and actions, has left much to be desired. It seems to me that you have long abandoned the Mission Statement LURD published in February of 2000.

The NCRM Cannot Keep Silent as Violence Continue In Liberia

The NCRM cannot, in good faith, keep silent as violence is being perpetrated against those that should be protected by the Monrovia regime and the rebel forces. There have been numerous reports that rebel forces fighting the Monrovia regime have killed, tortured, and raped civilians. This is unacceptable, and it must stop.

Anthony Kesselly Says No Sekou Conneh

While I may have my own very strong opinions about the inner workings of the armed group that has become known as the Liberians United for Reconstruction and Democracy, as with other armed factions that have preceded it, I do not want to delve into that at this point. What baffles me is the act of arbitrarily announcing my name for a position for which I was neither, consulted, informed, or even hinted.

LURD Makes Appointments
(A Statement from LURD's Secretariat)

This is to inform all concerned that the National Chairman/ Commander -In- Chief/LURD - H.E. Sekou Damate Conneh, Jr. has promulgated and published the following appointments and decisions

Confusion in Nimba? MODEL Surrounds the Town of Saclepea and LURD Prepares for Gbanga Again

By Masogbeh Kenneh
April 29, 2003

Fleeing civilians from Saclepea, Nimba County has confirmed reports of arm men around the town. Many believe that these are people of the rebel Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL). With less resistance in Tapita, MODEL decided to move forward toward Monrovia. There are reports that citizens of Nimba are joining the movement in mass.

LURD Denies Horrible Stories Keep Floating on Taylor's Website

April 28...Horrible stories keep floating on Taylor's website (allaboutliberia.com), falsely claiming that LURD's disciplined hard core guerillas are actively engaged in atrocities-such as maiming and brutalizing civilians. The Leadership of LURD consider said machinations naive and preposterous, the leadership however, realizes Taylor's unstable psychological disposition. (MORE)

Kamara Removed From LIMANY's Board of Directors
Press Release
April 28, 2003

As The Liberian Mandingo Association of New York (LIMANY) continues its campaign for peace and reconciliation in Liberia, we would like to announce the removal of Mr. Mohammed Kamara from his position as a member of LIMANY's Board of Directors. Citing a conflict of interest after Mr. Kamara was appointed LURD's representative in the United States, LIMANY's collective leadership, in consultation with its membership deem it necessary to take this action. It is our strong belief that he cannot serve on this Honorable body of men and women, while representing an armed rebellion. LIMANY is a peaceful organization. We'll promote and support peace anywhere and everywhere. LIMANY continues to call for an end to the violence and for Liberians to come together peacefully - violence can only bring about more death and destruction to innocent civilians.

The Liberian Mandingo Association of New York will continue to engage all parties involved for the promotion of a cease-fire within Liberia and for peace and reconciliation. In a time of violence in Liberia, our people continue to suffer. Our brothers and sisters are tired of moving from place to place, fleeing violence - we call for a cease-fire now and urge Liberia government and LURD to stop their violent campaigns for the sake of the Liberian citizens.

Signed:

Asumana Jabateh-Randolph
President

Mohammed S. Bility
Chairman of the Board

Rebels hold 60 percent of Liberia, UN reports

UNITED NATIONS, April 25 (Reuters) - Rebels have seized a stunning 60 percent of Liberia, including most its diamond-mining areas, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Friday, citing West African government sources.

The impoverished West African nation of 3 million people has also acknowledged importing arms and ammunition, despite a U.N. arms embargo, in response to rebel offensives, Annan said in his latest report to the U.N. Security Council.

ULAA President Kromah Responds to Allegations

Kromah--"When you elected me in a free and fair election to be the president of ULAA, you knew about my ethnic and religious backgrounds. You were sincere and objective enough to look beyond that. You believed in me, and I am sure you still do, when I promised to work sincerely in serving your interests. As I stand today, I am keeping that promise with utmost dedication and sincerity. The most important issue for us as Liberians today is peace, reconciliation and unity. We are working towards that end." (More)

LIMANY is honored to introduce Ms. Masogbeh Kenneh as our correspondent near the frontline. The 33 year old  reporter will be reporting once a week. Ms. Kenneh reports that Ganta is fully controlled by LURD fighters and are advancing toward Kpain and Sanniquellie. More to come.

Liberia: Amputation Among Govt Troops

- 'Jack the Rebel' Killed

April 23...Reports from Monrovia say government soldiers are openly complaining about a "bloody practice" that has begun within their ranks. They are now cutting off each other's hands along with those of  captured dissident militias. Liberian government militias have revealed that  some of their colleagues have begun a new wave of  "bloody practice" against fighters in their war with armed dissidents, and in some cases their own men. Our reporter said this is intended to show the international community that the armed dissidents are copying Sierra Leone's RUF rebels.

Group Calls for International Stabilization Force

April 23...A group calling itself the Coalition of Internally Displaced Camps around Monrovia has called for the deployment of an international stabilization force to disarm all illegal armed groups in Liberia, where fighting between pro- and anti-government forces has escalated in recent weeks.

Local Nimba Officials Working With LURD?

April 22...Sources in Sanniquellie hinted that Nimba County Superintendent Miller, along with other local county officials, are cooperating with LURD commanders in Nimba to achieve a peaceful solution to what could turn out to be a disastrous one for everyone. Many in the county are frustrated with the Taylor regime for the mistreatment of several Nimba citizens, such as the human rights lawyer Tiawon Gongloe, who was brutalized by the Taylor agents of death. The county officials are quick to mention the "promise never kept" – Senator Koukou’s failures in his position.

LURD’s Presence in Ganta Has Become an Embarrassment to Taylor.

April 19...LURD’s presence in Ganta has become an embarrassment for Taylor’s government. LURD claims to be in full control of Ganta, once a strategic base for Taylor’s troops, and with the arrival of the rainy season, movement will be slowed and the government’s chances of retaking Ganta will decrease. As result, Charles Taylor recently ordered ATU officers to forcibly recruit children, men and women or anyone for active duty to deprive Ganta as a rest stop for LURD forces en route for Monrovia. ATU agents are going from farm to farm forcing children to the front lines. Reports from Bassa reveal that truck-loads of fearful children are heading toward Nimba. One commander of the pro-government fighters told our correspondent in Buchanan that they were going to flush LURD out from Ganta. “We are in a rush to free Ganta or take enough areas before the raining season.”

MDCL Issues Statement of Concern

April 18....The Movement for Democratic Change in Liberia once again adds its voice in condemnation of the brutal, senseless killings of Liberians, who happen to be non-combatants in a war that should never have been. Liberia continues to pay an extremely high human toll in its quest for lasting peace. As the civilized world watches, Liberians are being slaughtered daily and nothing is being done to reverse this trend. Appeals for assistance to stop this carnage seem to fall upon deaf ears, as the rest of the world lends only passive response to the call for a more proactive stance against the atrocities being perpetrated in Liberia.

Liberians Urged not to Repeat the Mistakes of the 1980s and 90s

April 17...We, the Manos, Krahns, Mandingoes, and Dans of Grand Gedeh and Nimba Counties residing in the Americas, standing together as one family, appeal to our people at home in Liberia and elsewhere in the West African Sub-region to work together in search of a solution to the Liberian conflict. Let us not repeat the mistakes of the 1980s and 90s by allowing others to use us in their bid to seize or maintain power.

LIMANY Condemn Senator Koukou (Press Release)

April 14...The Liberian Mandingo Association of New York strongly condemns Senator George Koukou’s incitement of violence against innocent Liberian citizens, especially those from the Mandingo ethnic group.

To Senator George Koukou: Work to prevent the government from abusing innocent Liberians rather than inciting violence in the country by deviously manipulating ethnic divisions

Politics of Tribal and Religious Intolerance
April 9..In politics, we can expect one's opponents to run dirty campaign against him but when those opponents have no issue to discuss about their political foe, all they can come out with is something like, "Mohammed Kromah, a member of the Mandingo ethnic group of Islamic orientation, was elected to the national leadership of ULAA on 'an appealing platform' late last year, -- an election largely intended to disprove claims that Liberians are opposed to Mandingoes (Moslems) holding community and leadership positions. New front in Liberia fighting

Rebels of the Liberian United for Reconstruction and Democracy (Lurd) have opened a new front in the civil war with an attack on south-eastern Sinoe County, say the government.

Taylor's ATU and RUF Prepare to Enter Baala, Guinea
April 5...The worst humanitarian crisis in Guinea is about to occur in Baala if Taylor carries out his Toe Town type mass execution. Handful of ATU and RUF forces royal to Taylor are hold out somewhere in Nimba ready to enter Baala, Guinea.  To get back the support of the Nimba people, it is reported from  a AFL  officer in Monrovia that Taylor's RUF militiamen killed several people in Kpain last week, then putting the blame on the Mandingoes and Krahns. Other sources reported that Taylor's people have falsely linked the new rebel group call MODEL to Charles Zulu and Alhji Kromah. Taylor's stratigety is get the Nimba people totally involve in this mess, while his hired foreign mercenaries are controlling Monrovia. (More)  (return to Top)

Liberians to Protest Against the Illegal Detention of Aloysius Toe and Others
(A Press Release Issued by the National Civil Rights Movement)

April 2....On November 4, 2002, human rights activist, Aloysius Toe, was arrested after he and others from the "Liberia Coalition of Human Rights Defenders" announced plans for a week-long campaign to call for the unconditional release of brothers Hassan Bility (he broke the illegal chains and is now free), Ansumana Karama, Sheikh Sackor, and other illegally detained Liberians. Was there any prohibition against this planned, non-violent action by Mr. Toe and others? The answer, of course, is "no." (MORE)  (return to TOP)

Press Release: LIMANY Demands The Release of  Aloysius Toe, Mohammed Komara And Others.
Asumana Jabateh-Randolph
March 20....When President Charles Taylor jailed journalist Hassan Bility and others in Liberia, the Liberian Mandingo Association of New York (LIMANY) joined other Liberian organizations from across the US in standing resolute that the detainees had to be released unconditionally. Under the leadership of the National Civil Rights Movement, we had a successful peaceful demonstration last October in Washington, DC. It is clear that our collective effort was not in vain. Hassan Bility is a free man. The other falsely accused people, still being held hostage and tortured by the Liberian president’s security forces, will not be forgotten by LIMANY. Again, the plight of these innocent Liberians must not be forgotten.

Mandingoes Are Banned From Leaving Gbanga As Other Liberians flee.

The town of Gbarnga, 150 km from Monrovia, is again threatened, with reports that LURD controls Lofa Bridge and near-by town of Gbalatua. This latest armed activity has caused the residents of Gbanga to flee for their lives and the only hospital in the area, Phebe has evacuated most of its staff and patients. The town was contested last May, with reports of executions and heavy looting.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) confirmed “armed activity was also reported to be encircling Bong County, north of Monrovia. The fighting was reported to be moving rapidly towards Gbarnga. As fearful people continue to run away from Gbanga, the Mandingoes are being banned from leaving. "No dingo leaving from here, if LURD dogs come, they will bite we all." Said Captain Four Eyes. There are reports of increase arrest of anyone with a Mandingo name. (return to TOP),

Press Release-Gedeans Protest Toe Town Massacre
March 17...The Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas strongly condemns the attack on Toe Town, a border town in Grand Gedeh County which, prior to the recent attack, was refuge to more than ten thousand Ivorian and other West Africans fleeing fighting in neighboring Ivory Coast. We condemn the killing of the relief workers and other civilians as a result of this cruel incident. There can be no justifiable reason for the killing of innocent civilians, particularly aid workers who are providing humanitarian assistance to our people. (return to TOP), (Liberia Orbit)
