Saleeby
Booted Out of CBL The
Analyst (Monrovia)
Ellie
Saleeby, the man who presided over the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), the
nation's highest monetary institution amidst controversies and allegations
of impropriety has finally been hurried through the back door on the
insistence of a visiting IMF delegation to Liberia.
The delegation is in the country, according to our
sources, to help reconstruct Liberia's broken monetary links with the
outside world and establish conduits through which funds promised by
donors during the recent Conference on the Reconstruction of Liberia held
last February in New York.
3
More "Presidents" Surface
The date for Liberia's presidential and general elections
remains uncertain, but the list of presidential hopefuls gets
longer and longer while, interestingly, the country remains
bankrupt for legislative candidates. The newest names in the
presidential theater are former deputy Information Minister J. Milton
Teahjay, former Foreign Minister Lewis G. Brown, and former National
Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Soko Brown.
Already, the three presidential hopefuls have reportedly
organized exploratory campaign committees and taken other actions to
enter the crowdy race to Liberia's Executive Mansion.
Freeze
assets of ex-Liberia president, banks told
THE Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has issued
regulations to banks in Singapore to freeze the assets, if any, of the
former president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, who went into exile in
Nigeria last year.
The new regulations, which came into force last Friday and apply to all
financial institutions, are in line with the United Nations Security
Council's Resolution 1532.
Liberia
seals oil exploration deals with two firms
MONROVIA, May 7 (Reuters) - Two international oil
firms became the first winners in a round of bidding to explore Liberia's
17 offshore blocks, the head of the National Oil Co. of Liberia said
Friday.
Spain's Repsol <REP.MC> and Oranto of
Nigeria were awarded the rights to conduct 3D exploration in the West
African country's blocks 17 and 12, respectively, said Musah Dean, the
company's president and chief executive.
Understanding
Johnson-Morris’ Election 2005 Edicts (Nat
Galarea Gbessagee)
Former Liberian chief justice Frances Johnson-Morris raised eyebrows
in Liberian social and political cycles late April 2004 when she publicly
advocated for reduction in the number of political parties in Liberia in
time for the 2005 Liberian general elections, even if achieving such
reductions meant contravening the 1986 Liberian constitution. Mrs.
Johnson-Morris, also a former head of the church-sponsored Liberian human
rights group, the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission, is the newly
appointed chairman of the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC),
the body charged with planning and supervising the 2005 Liberian general
elections
The
Soundness of Taylor’s Indictment
(By Alvin J. Teage)
The
indictment against Charles M. Taylor (defendant) for crimes against
humanity has left an embarrassing mark on Liberia. This is the first time
a Liberian has been indicted for such heinous crimes, and the
defendant’s soon-to-come trial before the Special Court for Sierra Leone
is likely to generate more international attention. But does the
indictment violate Liberia’s Constitution as Mr. S.L. Lofen Keneah, Jr.
suggestion?
YOUNG LIBERIAN WRITER
SHARES HIS PAIN IN BOOK
For Liberian writer, Nvasekie N. Konneh
(NNK), the September 11 terrorist attack on the United States was a profound
moment of deep soul searching. He shares the same religious faith with those who
masterminded this terrible act and at the same time serving in the United States
navy having taken an oath to “defend and protect America against its enemies,
foreign and domestics.”
As a way of registering his own feeling of disapproval of
this terrible crime committed in the name of a religion, NNK was inspired to
write a book entitled “ Going To War For America”, which he officially launched
Saturday (April 24) at a well-attended program at the ACANA Hall in
Philadelphia. The book is a collection of poetry.
Liberian
soldiers get second chance to disarm - Channel News
Asia
CAREYSBURG, Liberia : Hundreds of soldiers from the armies of former
Liberian president Charles Taylor lined up for a second United Nations attempt
to return some 45,000 fighters to civilian life after 14 years of
war.
Most of the 250 men and women who arrived by truck at the cantonment
site 30 kilometers (18 miles) northwest of Monrovia were children when they took
up arms behind Taylor during the back-to-back civil wars that battered the
nation of 2.9 million from 1989 to 2003.
UN Opens Last Phase of Liberian Disarmament Amid Questions Over
Missing Guns
MONROVIA (AFP)
-- The UN was to open the latest phase of its efforts to disarm Liberia's 45,000
combatants on Friday, seeking to redeem itself after a disastrous start to the
process in December which forced a five-month delay in the campaign central to
rebuilding the west African state after 14 years of relentless war.
ULAA
Leadership Invited To Sweden
The Liberian Association of Sweden has extended an
invitation to ULAA's President, Madam Roberta Rashid to participate in the
planned All-Liberian Conference and Musical Concert in Stockholm, Sweden, 3rd
June to 5th June.
The President of LASWEDEN, Hon. James Sackor
Bartee: "We are of the opinion that this will be a time for Liberians to

regards to the development of our human resources and infrastructure."
A

The FOFANAS, including their spouses and immediate and distant relatives,
residing in Continental Africa (Liberia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Sierra
Leone, Mali, etc.) and outside of Continental Africa, including the United
States, Europe, and Asia, would like to exploit this occasion to extend
their sincerest and heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the good and
amicable people who have sympathized and continue to sympathize with them
on the deaths of their beloved ones, Mohammed A. FOFANA and Vamuyan FOFANA
(alias, Kanvee Muyan FOFANA), which sad events occurred about a
fortnight ago in Conakry and Macenta, Guinea, West Africa. May their souls
rest in perfect peace and light perpetual shine on them, Ameen!

UN
Expands Disarmament Program in Liberia
The U.N. disarmament program in Liberia has expanded to the port city of
Buchanan, five days after the process began in the central city of Gbarnga.
Officials say the program is now going well, after problems forced it to be
suspended in December.
LIBERIA:
Men, women and children disarm in MODEL stronghold
BUCHANAN, - Men women and child fighters from the Movement for Democracy in
Liberia (MODEL) lined up peacefully to hand in their weapons on Tuesday as the
UN peacekeepers opened a second disarmament camp in the port city of
Buchanan.
“We want peace, we want peace! No more war, no more war!”
chanted the former combatants as they gathered in the streets of Buchanan on
their way to the specially constructed cantonment site.
Washington
welcomes progress in Liberia
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House welcomed progress toward stability in Liberia while stressing
there was still much more work to be done. "The United States welcomes the recent progress in Liberia. Despite
difficult circumstances, Chairman (Gyude) Bryant and his government have
been performing well in an effort to move forward important reforms for
the people of Liberia," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said
in a statement.
Liberia's
second rebel group starts handing in guns
MONROVIA, Liberia (Reuters) -- Fighters from a
Liberian rebel faction known as Model handed over guns Tuesday in the port city
of Buchanan, following the lead of a larger rebel group that began disarming
last week.
Be
ware of them!
What a hard way to learn your lesson from your mistakes! They come with bag full
of empty lies. They do not care about what happens to you afterwards, they are
only interested in their own welfare. Do not let them give you guns again for
empty promises. Value you own lives and those of other Liberians. Do not kill
your own people again because somebody promises to give you something he does
not own…BE WARE OF THEM!
LIBERIA:
Bitter LURD fighters say their leaders betrayed them
GBARNGA, 19 Apr 2004 (IRIN) - Former fighters of Liberia’s LURD rebel movement say they are happy enough to hand over their guns to UN peacekeeping troops, but many grumble that they have been forgotten and abandoned by their own political leaders.
The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) launched a programme to disarm,
demobilise and rehabilitate an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 former combatants
throughout Liberia in the northern town of Gbarnga last week.
Do
not repeat the mistakes of the past
Aagon Gweh Linfordthe:
If disarmament and demobilization is to yield better
results and bring lasting peace toLiberia, the major players including the
international community, GOL and the factional heads must consider the

IMF Assessment & Development Priorities in Liberia (Nat Galarea Gbessagee) In his article, "Calm Against Corruption: All is Not Lost," (New
Democrat, 16 April 2004), Mr. Kolec E. Jersey gave an upbeat account of a recent
report by an IMF Assessment Team to Liberia, and cautioned fellow Liberians to
"calm down a bit about some of our judgments on the transitional government,
take a deep breath, and not be carried away by news report emanating from
Monrovia."
THE
FOUNDATION'S POSITION STATEMENT
Our nation has been confronted by social and political instabilities
for a long time, and such instabilities have been dominated by greed,
ethnic and religious intolerance, which have affected the entire nation.
We have seen, among other things, a disproportionate number of the
Liberian youths deprived of formal education, used as fighters for the
various armed groups, and have been repeatedly let down. Indeed, the
civil-war years have placed huge burdens on our nation, and we strongly
believe that it is our duty to take responsible steps to move the nation
from the current state of despair to that of peace, stability, and
development.
UN
Resumes Disarmament of Liberia's Former Combatants
The United Nations has resumed the long-delayed process of disarmament in Liberia after an initial attempt in December was suspended amid chaos.
The first five days of the new disarmament campaign will focus on the central
town of Gbarnga, a stronghold for the rebels from Liberians United for
Reconciliation and Democracy, or LURD.
Give Politics New Meanings And Practices For The
Good Of Our Society.
Open Letter From Dr. Joseph Korto: A commanding priority is to give politics new meanings and practices for the good of our society. Thus, we cannot afford for the crucial 2005 elections to be business as usual, or politics the old Liberian way.
In view of the
foregoing, we must remind ourselves of those old political values, attitudes and
practices that have given politics bad tastes and failed results in Liberia. Our
failure to do so would certainly give the upcoming crucial elections a bad
beginning.
Taylor speaks out from exile
Liberia's former president, Charles Taylor, has spoken out for the first
time since he began his exile in the eastern Nigerian town of Calabar eight
months ago.
Guinea leaders barred from travel
Two opposition leaders in Guinea say they have been barred from travelling
abroad amid a government crackdown on political opponents. Former Prime Minister Sidya Toure and Ba Mamadou of the Union of Democratic
Forces in Guinea (UFDG) were barred from flying to Senegal.
Mr Toure told the BBC he plans to take legal action against the government.
Senior officials of Mr Toure's party have been arrested for allegedly plotting
a coup.
Why elections in the cloud of
terror?
A rejoiner to
"PUTTING THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE IN LIBERIA"
Mr.Editor,I am writing to admonish Liberians to do away with the notions of
holding elections in two years. Fourteen years of devastation and ballyhoo can
not be remedied within twenty four months.Chance should be given to the present
government to solidify its foundation for lasting peace. No single stone of
terror should be left untouched by the government in making all of Liberia safe
for normal life.
AN HUMBLE CALL FOR BLESSINGS AND
SUPPORT AS THEY GET MARRIED
A Liberian youth activist has taken a wife, Ms. Massa Keita, in a
grand traditional ceremony on March 14, 2004 in Philadelphia, putting an end his
era of bachelorhood. Sekou Korleh, current Chairman of the Association of
Liberian Youth in Pennsylvania (ALYP) expressed joy at his step to marriage. "I
don’t know how to express it. I am just grateful to God for making me achieved
this feat."
A son of the Quadu-Gborni Mandingo chiefdom in Lofa
County, Korleh is a an energetic and a tenacious young man, who has always been
in the lead advocating for the betterment of Liberian youths in the Americas and
in his native country, Liberia. "I want to see the future leaders of my country
become productive citizens that our country would depend on tomorrow," said
Korleh.
Clashes
reported in central Liberia despite UN warning
MONROVIA (AFP) - Clashes and looting were reported in a
central Liberian town, after UN forces in the west African country vowed to
crack down on fighters whose actions could derail the fragile peace process.
PUTTING THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE IN
LIBERIA
Will Liberia be a "normal functioning society" in 2006 after the elections? I
doubt it seriously. Should general elections be our mean concern right now in
Liberia? I do not think so. If we hold elections in 2005 without the scrupulous
implementation of the provisions of the cease-fire agreement in its entirety
ensuring a stable political environment, in which our people can live in freedom
under the law, and true lasting peace from any threat against their security, we
will be "PUTTING THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE" again just like we did in 1997.
Remember the old Liberian saying, "Hurry, hurry burst trousers".
LIBERIA-NIGERIA:
Exiled Taylor deserted by followers as hard ...
Close aides said most of his entourage had deserted him, heading back to
Liberia or dispersing within Nigeria in search of better fortunes
UN
hopes to resume Liberia disarmament mid-April
MONROVIA, April 7 (Reuters) - The United Nations hopes to resume a disarmament
scheme in Liberia in mid-April, nearly four months after it was suspended, a
senior U.N. official said on Wednesday.
Liberia
beefs up budget
Monrovia - Liberia's transitional legislature has passed the budget recently
submitted to it by interim leader Gyude Bryant. But instead of the $23.5m
budget submitted by Bryant, the legislature passed a budget of $25.7m budget
for the period from February to June, the legislative press bureau told
reporters on Tuesday.
ULAA Elections Commission Chairman
Resigns
Abraham G. Massaley: "I am writing to
resign my position as Chairman of the National Elections Commission of the Union
of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA) with immediate effect. My
resignation stems from my sharp disagreement with the decision by the ULAA Board
to reject the Revised Elections Law for the upcoming general elections in the
Union."
Rehabilitation of a Nation: Liberia’s
Path to National Recovery-The Need to Utilize the Services of Liberian
Professional Psychotherapists
As the war in Liberia has been declared over after fourteen years of blood
letting, the nation is now in a position to regroup and move forward in a
fashion that will lead to total resettlement of internally displaced people
(IDP) and refugees returning to the country, rehabilitation, reintegration,
reconstruction and above all, empowerment of the people of the nation. The
situation in the country for the past fourteen-year has been very appalling and
I do not know whether people in the United States and other parts of the world
are well informed about our plight as a nation.
Malawian peace

16-day voyage to Argentina inside a ship's anchor compartment. The boys
survived on three cakes and a bottle of water and said two others had fallen
overboard. "Our life in Monrovia was hell, we were on our own,"
said Mohammed Sherif.
Former warlord Johnson warns against war crimes tribunal
The former army officer, who tortured to death former president Samuel Doe,
recording the gory process on video tape, began by warning Liberia’s

recovering from a 14-year civil war.

hopeful, is best-known for the 1990 kidnapping, torture and killing of
Liberia's then-president, Samuel Doe. A much-circulated video recorded
Johnson looking on languidly while his followers carried out Johnson's
order to slice off Doe's ear.
