The former leader of the defunct Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia says slain former President Samuel Doe’s body was burned to ashes and thrown into a river at his Caldwell base outside Monrovia. The former rebel leader turned Evangelist Prince Johnson said former President Samuel Doe was captured at the Freeport of Monrovia in sharp violation to initial troth carved between the defunct AFL and the INPFL.
According to Senator Johnson, former President Doe entered his territory at the Freeport of Monrovia without his prior knowledge. He confirmed that during an attempt to arrest Doe, one of President Doe personal securities in person of Sam Blay occasionally wanted to disarm he(Johnson) that which his men vehemently resisted. He said the late President Doe was shot at his leg before his arrest.
Commenting on the summary execution of vulnerable and armless civilians at his Caldwell base, the former rebel General expressed disappointment over the summary execution of Michael Doe whose death he termed as unfortunate. He said Michael Doe was falsely linked to secret meetings with the NPFL as alleged by Annie Buttress. “Never did we know that both Annie Buttress and Michael Doe were contesting over a position at the Hotel Africa”, he revealed. He disclosed that after they (Fighters) realized that Annie Buttress lied on Michael Doe, an attempt to kill her was launched but her life was saved by Dr. Levi Zanghai who flown her over to neighboring Sierra Leone.
Mr. Johnson who is also senior senator of Nimba County maintained that his involvement into the armed struggles came as the result of an aggression that resulted into several deaths launched by former Liberian President Samuel Doe against the people of Nimba County. He named instances where men believed to have been combatants of the defunct AFL led by former President Samuel Doe buried children alive.
General Johnson also revealed that after the aborted rebel incursion in 1985, remnants of the late Quoakpa invasion regrouped in neighboring Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso and were finally taken to the Camp Weelis base in Libya by Charles Taylor who later became their head. “Due to constant lies and evil plans instituted by Charles Taylor, we were exposed to danger and brave our ways into Nimba County on December 24, 1989”, he said.
He confirmed the deaths of Decomso Roberts, Moses Varney, Edwin Vaye and so on as those committing acts incompatible to the Standard Operational Procedures established by the INPFL. He accused President Sirleaf Security advisor Boimah Fahnbulleh for being part of Quoakpa invasion and termed his involvement as selfish and devilish.
Commenting further on the INPFL and the Interim Government of National Unity led by Dr. Amos Sawyer, Senator Johnson accused Dr. Sawyer for fomenting troubles and stealing the resources of the Liberian people. He confirmed that after the death of former President Samuel Doe, he (Johnson) personally gave a document comprising the amount of 8.7 million United States Dollars seized from Doe to Dr. Sawyer.
The former rebel leader turned senator buttressed the view propounded by the former witness of the TRC Joe Wylie that Liberia is seated on a Town bomb. He recommended the availabilities of jobs to the suffering people of Liberia and pleaded with Liberians not to go back to wars again.
The Nimba County senator was speaking during his testimony at the ongoing thematic and institutional hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Monrovia.
