For
The Sake of Nimba
By Ansu S.Dolley
January 20, 2005
I
have been following the recent reconciliation conferences organized by
the Mande-Mel Union and the Superintendent of Nimba County, Mr.
Harrison S. Karnwea to reunite some of the tribes of the county, the
Gios, Manos on one hand and the Mandingoes on the other.
I will like to take this time to thank the organizers of the
conferences and all the participants for their valuable and precious
time taken to bring peace once again to our beloved county in
particular and Liberia in general. I will like at this time to join
the peace loving people of
Liberia to call on the people of Nimba, especially, the Gios and Manos
to let bygone be bygone, and put aside our differences and unite for
the sake of peace so we can start to think about bringing development
in the county.
Our county is very rich in mineral and human resources. There are so
many development opportunities but, we have to unite so we can be able
to utilize them. For those that are refusing to dialogue, please see
reason and accept the reconciliation for the sake of the future of the
county. Let it be known to them that no one tribe owns Nimba County
more than the others and that Nimba County minus any of its tribes
will not be a complete Nimba.
The six tribes of Nimba are equal under the laws of the land
(Liberia). Every tribe in Nimba played its part in the decade and a
half long civil war. Therefore, the Gios and Manos cannot demand
apology from any particular tribe without apologizing to the other
tribes. Demanding an apology from the Mandingoes without acknowledging
what they have done to the Mandingoes is a step in the wrong
direction. The actions they demonstrated in Ganta recently were very
counter-productive to the genuine efforts other people are making for
peace and reconciliation in the country as a whole.
Let it also be known to those Gios and Manos that their refusal to
dialogue with their fellow citizens is sending a very bad signal that
they have not learnt anything from the many years of war. I hope and
pray that the next scheduled meeting be a success so we can once again
coexist as one people of the same county.
