The
Way to Lasting Peace in Liberia

The question is whether if
peace returns to Liberia as all hope, it will be durable or might
just be a recess for another round of violence. It is this debate on
whether or not there will be lasting peace in Liberia following the
Accra Peace Agreement that I want to make a contribution to this
morning. Therefore, I will speak to you this morning on the topic: The
Way to Lasting Peace in Liberia
|
WHAT
DOES TOM KAMARA WANT?
Tom has been one of the
most consistent critics of Charles Taylor. Now that Taylor is out and the
interim leader is finally put forward, it will be better for him to join
others to work with Chairman Bryant in whichever capacity possible so that
the desired result may be achieved.

A
REPLY TO LIBERIA'S CRY
Until
you see a need for change, you can't create a change. The political and
socio-economic mal-experiences faced by Liberians with the statecraft of
former president Charles Taylor, have surpassingly brightened our sights,
quenched our thirsts and filled our guts.

THE
DAY THAT WILL LIVE FOREVER IN OUR MEMORY
Monday
August 11, 2003 will be remembered as a historic day in Liberia and indeed
in Africa-seeing an African leader resigning under whatever condition. In
Africa, we fight to the last because we don't want to accept defeat even
if we cannot win. (CONTINUE)
WE WANT
PEACE NO MORE WAR
Message...As
we watched history unfolded today, Mr. Charles G. Taylor, former President
of Liberia, boarded a Nigerian aircraft today, presumably heading for
Nigeria, which will be his new home away from home. Since Mr. Taylor is no
longer in Liberia, let's continue to pray for the restoration of the long
lost peace that our people have yearned for over the past 14 years. Let us
begin the healing process.....

Mandingoes, The
Liberian Civil War: What Next?
ABU
M. KAMARA.....I would suggest that as the dust settles,
special arrangement be made in order to rehabilitate the war
victims in our midst ranging from handicapped to orphans etc. This will
make life more meaningful for
those who suffered from bodily injuries in the course of war and further
strengthen our unity.
Liberia's
Child Soldiers Await Disarmament
MONROVIA,
Liberia - Child soldiers cradle AK-47s at jungle checkpoints and on street
corners, their gun muzzles cooled by a tenuous peace and their minds
longing for rarities Liberia may never be able to provide them: Intact
families. Proper schooling. Jobs.
Absent those, Liberians and aid workers say, a generation of child
soldiers who grew up with the gun in this thoroughly destroyed West
African nation will remain simply idled, disgruntled fighters waiting for
the next war.

African Peacekeepers Enter Liberia's 2nd Port City
West African peacekeepers have entered Liberia's second port city of
Buchanan to the cheers of refugees lining the road. Liberia's President
Moses Blah has apologized to the families of those killed in the 14 years
of civil war.
Until now, the peacekeepers have been deployed largely in the capital,
Monrovia. Sporadic fighting and looting by rebel and government soldiers
have been reported in many areas of the country.
Liberia
Says Claims of Rebel Offensive is Lie
MONROVIA, Liberia - Liberia's defense chief said Wednesday that
reports of rebel attacks on one central town were rumors spread by his own
troops to facilitate looting. West African peace troops headed into the
interior to examine other reports of fighting.
The moves come as heavy streams of refugees flowed toward Monrovia from
towns just to the north, fleeing what the government has claimed were new
rebel attacks despite a week-old peace deal.
LIBERIANS
IN PA TO ELECT NEW LEADERS ON SATURDAY
Election debates are traditionally held to
give voters the chance to weigh potential candidates vying for positions.
For some voters, debates are mere formalities, but for others, debates
provide them the chance to either change their mind for a candidate or
reinforce their loyalty to a candidate.
This was exactly the scene at the presidential debate
held in Philadelphia, Sunday night when three presidential candidates
running for offices in the Liberian community association of Pennsylvania
presented their platforms to community members. The event was held at the
famous ACANA Hall on Chester Avenue and was attended by hundreds of
Liberian residents.

MONROVIA, Liberia--Liberia's president asked the United States on Monday

Nimba County as reported by Benjamin Yeaten.

that Liberia is a divided nation from the "disaster" of the

vowed, "we will rise again" as a nation.
George

Lied About Massacre In Bahn, Nimba?
Tegen Wanti, a Nimba County resident reached by satellite telephone, said
people of the town of Bahn had heard nothing about the deaths of 1,000
people that state radio had reported.
'Many
dead in Liberian massacre'
Many people have been killed and villages set on fire in a town in north
east Liberia, according to reports. General Benjamin Yeaten, deputy head
of the government army, told the AFP news agency that the attack had taken
place in an area north east of Monrovia.
Liberian state radio said rebels from the Movement for Democracy in
Liberia (Model) had carried out the massacre in the town of Bahn, near the
border with Ivory Coast.

Liberia's
New Leader Seen As Unifier
ACCRA,
Ghana - Gyude Bryant, who was chosen Thursday to lead postwar Liberia, is
seen as a consensus-builder who was a longtime campaigner against the rule
of warlord Charles Taylor.
Bryant, a 54-year-old businessman, led a 1997 effort to unite political
parties behind a civilian candidate in Liberia's first elections after a
ruinous 1989-96 civil war.
Now, with Taylor in exile and Liberia again emerging from bloodletting,
the gentle-mannered Bryant is in charge.
The
oldma lost again
"To
choose a killer of innocent people as President of a nation is
unforgivable." Said one delegates. It must have been very difficult
for politicians to select Ellen. Maybe not. At one time in Liberia history
people voted for a killer who killed close to half million people in West
Africa. His name is Charles Taylor and people know perfectly well about
Ellen's instruction to him: "Destroy
the country and we shall rebuild it in a short time..." Not
only did he destroy it, he killed everything in and outside his path, way
before ULIMO, LURD or MODEL.
Liberian
foes choose leader, he is Bryant
Government and rebel delegates have selected a businessman, Gyude Bryant,
to head Liberia's interim post-war administration.
His appointment was formally announced on Thursday in Ghana, where
peace talks have been taking place for more than two months. "I see
myself as a healer," said Mr Bryant after being chosen ahead of two
other candidates.
Liberian

August

Liberia's power-sharing authority later on Wednesday under the deal signed
on Monday.
A shortlist of three has already been selected by political
parties and civic society groups. Sirleaf's name is included.

The long awaited Peace Agreement on Liberia
was signed yesterday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra. According to the

consensus candidates to be nominated by the 18 political parties.
Cheap
Propaganda Panics Nimba?
Hundreds of refugees, mainly ethnic Manos and Gios, are one-by-one
entering Guinea. The new arrivals say that panic has overtaken all of
Nimba County – many telling of forced conscription into the remnants of
Charles Taylor's army in a war many are saying that Taylor and Blah’s
forces have lost.
LURD attributes the panic in Nimba to cheap propaganda by unpaid
government officials. "Even the report by BBC stringer, Jonathan
Paylalea that our forces are on the move toward Monrovia is the cheapest
by the remnants of Taylor's officials to derail the peace process,"
said the Frontline Commander in Gbanga. "The war is over for us. We
are only defending our position and waiting to turn our areas to the
peacekeepers as we did in Monrovia."
Liberia
plan calls for government run by international committee
MONROVIA, Liberia — Almost everyone here says Liberia is a failed
nation, and has been for many years. Until 72 hours ago, no one had known
quite what to do about it. Now a plan is taking shape to turn over control
of this powerless, penniless, starving country to a U.N. trusteeship — a
kind of world government.
ALHAJI
FUMBA KAMARA: THE MAN OF THE PEOPLE
When
the death of Alhaji Fumba Kamara was announced on Thursday, July 24, 2003
in Ivory Coast, those who knew him lamented a vacuum has been created in
the Liberian community. His wives and children have lost a true husband
and father, and his partners in business lost a leader, someone who
associated himself with fair play and objectivity in business dealings. (MORE)
Liberian
Leader Leaves Talks Without Deal
MONROVIA
(Reuters) - Liberia's new leader flew home empty-handed from peace talks
with rebel factions in Ghana on Saturday as West African peacekeepers
beefed up a force to help end nearly 14 years of war.
With most rebels out of Monrovia since the deployment of Nigerian
troops backed by U.S. Marines, a trickle of relief aid helped assuage
hunger for hundreds of thousands of people trying to rebuild their lives.
U.S.
Marines Land in Liberia as Rebels Pull Back

MONROVIA (Reuters) - U.S. Marines, helicopters
and screaming jets backed up West African peacekeepers as they pushed into
rebel-held areas of Liberia's battle-worn capital Monrovia on Thursday to
a riotous heroes' welcome.
Thousands of people surged out, cheering, dancing and
punching the air, as Nigerian troops of the Ecomil force crossed key
bridges to take up positions from ragtag fighters pulling out now pariah
leader Charles Taylor has flown into exile.
Bursts of gunfire -- joyful blasts from the rebels -- rang out when the
peacekeepers moved into the port

PRESS RELEASE: Model

the patriotism and perseverance of the Liberian people; the commitment of
the international community especially the United States, the EU and human
rights organizations; and the international press and the Liberian

against the Liberian people.
Hungry
Liberians storm port
Thousands
of desperate Liberians have rushed into the main port area in the capital
to loot food despite rebel attempts to stop them.
The BBC's Barnaby Phillips in Monrovia said that rebel soldiers fired
in the air and beat the looters with sticks, but could not prevent the
theft of a significant proportion of United Nations food stocks.
Taylor's
Vision 2024 Cut Short
What
seems to be very disappointing for Charles Taylor, now former president of
Liberia would be that he did not stay at the Executive Mansion, the seat
of all Liberian presidents, to accomplish his so-called 'Big Dream'
philosophy dubbed as 'Vision 2024', which he had envisioned for
transforming war torn Liberia into a 'shinning nation.
Taylor
Blasts U.S. in Farewell Address
MONROVIA, Liberia - President Charles Taylor delivered a farewell address
Sunday to a nation bloodied by 14 years of war, declaring himself
"the sacrificial lamb" to end what he said was a U.S.-backed
rebel war against his besieged regime.

surrounding the death of his colleague, 18-year old Abraham Sheriff and
others, who were shot and killed by LURD forces Saturday.

bleeding and falling down," a young Liberian boy, who sustained
bullet wounds on his leg from LURD's random shooting explained.

TAYLOR PLANNING ATTACKS
ON PEACEKEEPERS TO BE BLAMED ON LURD, SAYS LURD'S REPRESENTATIVES IN GHANA
LURD: "We have more than the usual worries
based on Mr. Taylor's past. We have credible information that Mr. Taylor
is marking T-shirts with "LURD" inscription to be worn by his
people with instruction to attack peacekeepers with the obvious aim that
such act will be blamed on LURD fighters."
"We also have information that Mr. Taylor is still
very much bent on fighting to get back the port area of Monrovia before
the ECOWAS Vanguard Interposition Force, now landing in Monrovia, has
fully established itself in and around the city." (Continue)

who were incarcerated with him by the Government of president Charles.
Peace
troops deploy in Monrovia
The first West African peacekeepers have arrived in Liberia, aiming to end
two months of bloody clashes in the capital, Monrovia.
Some 30 Nigerian soldiers emerged from two white United Nations
helicopters at Robertsfield airport, 40km from Monrovia, in heavy rain,
and fanned out with machine guns at the ready to secure the runway.
Immigrants
in anguish over war
To
some 300,000 Liberians living in the United States, Roberta Rashid is a
daily messenger of grim news.
Rashid is the National Executive Vice President of the
Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas, ULAA. From her computer in
Highland Park home, she dispatches e-mail updates -- and sometimes
gruesome images -- about her native country, now ripped apart by a
four-year insurgency to oust President Charles Taylor, a former warlord
blamed for 14 years of violent conflict.
"It's upsetting," said Rashid, who could not
utter her third word without pausing to rub away tears. "Every day,
more of our people are dying."

A
GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR LIBERIANS
A
major turning point in the ongoing Liberian crisis unfolds with the
arrival of the West African military experts in Monrovia on Monday. The
team led by Brigadier General Festu Okonkwo patrolled the city centers and
the Bushrod Island to assess the situation in those areas Thursday amidst
jubilation from war-wearied crowd.
GROUP
SHELLING MONROVIA IDENTIFIED AS LURD GIVES TO THE PEOPLE
July 30...There are credible reports that
mortar shells falling in Monrovia, especially in the diplomatic enclave of
Mamba Point were not fired by LURD rebels, but forces loyal to embattled
Liberian leader Charles Taylor, who said the United States has "
blood on its hand for supporting the LURD rebels."
Reverend Dr. Walter D.
Richards Preaches Religious Intolerance in the "New Liberia"
While it is true that most Liberians and friends of Liberia are
weary of the continuous degradation of our country as the result of our
own perpetrated vices, the fact remains that some are yet to see reason
for us to come together, compromise our various differences, and advance
national interest rather than personal ones.
Some of these people who are very intolerant of others are still
campaigning to advance their old age failed ideologies into the popularly
anticipated "Emancipated" Liberia. These people, such as Dr.
Walter Richards, still hold that either their way or no way. They maintain
that the "New Liberia" must be as they have anticipated, or no
