WHERE ARE WE AFTER THE WAR?
A Keynote Speech By Nvasekie N. Konneh at the Inauguration Program Of The Atlanta Mandingo Association in Atlanta, Georgia

The reality we face in Liberia today is a clear indication that the war is not yet over. But let me quickly remind you that the real war that must be fought now requires different ways and strategies from the previous ones. It requires that we must be educated; that we must engage the political and the legal systems; that we must frankly engage our fellow Liberians in dialogue about our cultural, religious diversity and reconciliation.

Morality From Within
The year 2004 got its share of the longstanding, religious debate. We are even told the moral vote decided a major presidential election. While religion comes in different forms, the core lesson of every religion is kindness toward others. We are asked to feed the hungry. Give water to the thirsty. Give clothe to the naked. Heal the sick. Shelter the homeless. And treat others, including those with no or different faith, fairly.

THE LAST LAUGH
At last, the census issue with regards to the forthcoming elections in war-torn Liberia has finally been put to rest.  Therefore, Liberians should now prepare themselves (just in case they haven’t done so already) to witness one of the most exciting elections ever in the failed West African state’s history.  Or at least, that’s what some people are saying.

WHO ARE THOSE THAT KEEP FAILING LIBERIA?
From 1980 to present most Liberians continue to make the same mistake of singing and dancing to songs such as, “native women born soldier, soldier killed Tolbert,” you killed my pa, you killed my ma, I will vote for you, and now you know book, you don’t know book that you we want.” These slogans/songs mainly by some of our citizens continue to show the outside world our level of education.

UNITY AND RECONCILIATION, A WAY FORWARD…Amara Konneh
I speak of reconciliation and unity because of the new challenge facing us in our country. Division among Mandingoes makes no sense in an age when our country is recovering from a senseless civil war. It makes no sense in an age when a misunderstanding between two Liberian citizens in Paynesville can ignite the kind of destructions Monrovia and its environs experienced a few weeks ago. It makes no sense in an age when a presidential aspirant is forced by a church to denounce Islam in a country badly in need of tribal and religious reconciliation.

Leadership without conviction no doubt leads to disaster ..Bryant’s words were wonderful, but as we have come to learn, such sentiments are easily corrupted. When it comes to which court is vested with the jurisdictional power and legal authority to try Mr. Taylor for knowingly and intentionally committing war crimes and crimes against humanity separately and distinctly in Liberia and more so in Sierra Leone, every law abiding Liberian and peace loving citizen of this world needs to immediately and out-rightly part company and moral distance with Mr. Charlie.
