Rebuilding failed states
What can the world do about state failure? Surprisingly, quite a lot ONE and a half years ago, Liberia was a failed state. Two separate groups of drug-emboldened teenage rebels controlled most of the country. A gangsterish president, Charles Taylor, was losing control even over Monrovia, the capital, where all sides were firing heavy artillery into office blocks and looting strategic spots such as the brewery.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO LIBERIA IF WEAH BECOMES PRESIDENT?
But you see, in Liberia, when we like something, we like it all the way till “we don’t want to know,” and when we hate something, we don't want to know if there is any redeeming value in it. That's what makes politic a dangerous profession in a country like Liberia. That's why Alpha Blondy sings, "politiki magning," (politic is no good).

REMEMBERING SOLOMON DONZO
Every big or small town has its hometown celebrity. And since there's not much going on in most of our towns or villages, the fellow who plays soccer and plays it well is usually that hometown celebrity. He's the one that all the girls are falling for. He's burrowed by other teams from far and near to play for them. As he goes from village to village and from town to town, his legend grows, as people would cheer him on. People would expect that he score goals in every game he plays.

Riposte: Does ULAA Speak for ALL Liberians?
The LAC episode has forced a grudging dialogue amongst Liberian politicians in such a way that everyone is attempting to credit themselves as defenders of the people. Let me confess that my respect for the ULAA broad chairman, Anthony Kesselly, might have imposed a psychological shift excusing an honest examination of ULAA’s deeds.

DISENFRANCHISING LIBERIANS – THE 2005 VOTE
Not too long from now or within just about eight months Liberians will be going back to the polls hopefully to elect another government.   But as promising as this may seem to some people, it’s very unfortunate that Liberians who are currently residing abroad, many of them forced out of the country because of the various brutal wars that once raged there, will not be allowed to participate in the exercise.

Do Liberians Need a National Conference Before the October 2005 Elections?
Now that the war in Liberia is perceived to be over and disarmament is presumed to be comprehensive and complete, there are seemingly some discomforting and disturbing voices coming out of this tiny West African Country. For instance, there are disturbing and discomforting voices that are demanding and declaring that unless Liberians take the courage and seize the strength now to immediately go to the polls and vote in their new leaders come October 2005, the political goodwill and economic doors of the international community will certainly be forever shut before us and in our faces.

Liberia: On the road in Nimba County
Liberians had told us that Saniquelle was a beautiful city before the war and that it was a popular destination for a respite from the humid crowds of Monrovia. We passed severely war-damaged structures but as we traveled to Saniquelle, there was evidence of international NGOs and donors projects spreading out along the road.

DOES ULAA SPEAK FOR ALL LIBERIANS? (Editorial)
ULAA has shown its consistent silence regarding the illegal land seizure and occupation of homes and properties belonging to Liberians from the Mandingo ethnic group in Nimba County. It seems that ULAA and others only speak when it is politically expedient, choosing only to address those issues that serve their political interests. This type of selective and unfair advocacy is wrong for Liberia, and it lacks the type of moral conviction that an organization, such as ULAA, needs.

AIDS is going to be a big problem in Liberia, said the doctor in Nimba county. We are seeing full blown cases of AIDS but there is nothing we can do for them. We can t test them to see if they have AIDS since the nearest testing facility is a 14-hour drive away.

Shame on the Liberian Government for its Treatment of the Ex-combatants
As our beloved Liberia slowly rises from her feet after fourteen years of senseless killing and destructions that left countless numbers of our young generation not knowing how to read and write, one might think that the primary responsibility of any Liberian government or organization would be to put its money where its mouth is by investing in the future of those it claims to lead.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: HONORING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
While for the most part the struggle of the African people has been against racial prejudice, the later day struggle should also focus on the inside against our own practice of tribal and religious prejudice against one another. When one looks across Africa today, and other places where there are people of African descent, there are disease and poverty on the massive scale. So certainly, as Black people, we are yet to arrive to the Promised Land as envisioned by the visionaries of the past.

Who Should We Trust With the Presidency?
For an understanding of the political misfeasance that led us to war should also put us in a position to determine whom we TRUST with future leadership. Any individual who, throughout the period of the war, was in a position to do something and fails to do so, was silent without cause, or acted in any way or form hurtful to the interest of the masses, should not be worthy of our vote, irrespective of his/her academic standing or social status.

Africa 2005: Outlook (Abdoulaye W. Dukulé)
The African Union (AU) held its annual Summit in Abuja and celebrated its fourth anniversary on the last weekend of January 2005 and looked at some crucial issues. The war in Sudan that had been termed “a genocide” by much of the world, including Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell before the Arab solidarity reduced it to a “humanitarian crisis” has become a contentious matter that divided the Union in two groups: the Arab countries sided with the government of Sudan while the Sub-Saharan nations shyly agreed to a formula “calling on the international community to send troops …

Beware, Liberian Youths, They Are at Your Doors Again
Over the years the youth of Liberia continue to be used by warlord, politician and other job seekers in the name of serving the Liberian people. Many have used statements such as, “I want to seek the interest of the Liberian youth” or “I want to serve the Liberian people for the betterment of our young generation.” These statements and many others may have appealed to the masses, but how many of these people making these statements have upheld their values?

Liberia’s Political Nightmares: A response to Bettie and Nagbe
One would think that intellectual engagement should objectively diagnose Liberia’s problem, in a framework of projecting alternative axioms for good governance, not condemnation, political agitation, and dehumanization of others’ political choice or choices. The attempt here is to expose these Oppong’s critics as Liberia’s political nightmares.
