Monrovia, Liberia – UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Ellen Margrethe Løj praised the officers of the Indian Formed Police Unit 1 Contingent for going beyond their call of duty in building bridges between Liberian communities and peacekeepers. Their selfless and altruistic acts in the execution of their duties, she noted, have contributed to establishing and developing “meaningful relationships with our hosts.”

On December 5, 2010, the Unity Party, through its Delaware Chapter, published an article on the Liberian Journal website about Cllr. Charles W. Brumskine that can most accurately be described as deliberate misinformation intended to deceive the readers. It appears that the character of Unity Party is conforming closely to the character of its Standard Bearer, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Roughly about two weeks ago, while conducting a routine visit to the FELMAUSA website, I stumbled across an article entitled “ Financial Malpractice looms over FELMAUSA”. At first, I thought it was one of those trivial articles of no positive substance affecting our vibrant community, (the Mandingo Community). But then out of curiosity, the title sounded captivating and attractive to me. I was especially attracted to the article by two strange elements of attraction, a) the words “Financial Malpractice and b) the photo erected next to article depicting an image of a strong community leader, the president of the Liberian Mandingo Association of Pennsylvania (LIMAP), Mr. Mohammed Bility.

A severely ill ten month-old baby girl was rushed to the United States by the West African Children’s Support Network (WACSN) to receive emergency corrective surgery for a life-threatening defect called omphalocele. This rare defect means that the child was born with her internal organs on the outside of her body, where abdominal muscles and skin was never fully formed to cover vital organs. At five months old, a visiting United Nations doctor at the J.F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia performed minor corrective surgery to stabilize the child’s condition. But, the child still needed major corrective surgery, which could not be performed in Liberia, and doctors believe that the likelihood of death was high if the course of the child’s condition was not interrupted with advanced medical treatment outside of the country before her first birthday.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS DELIVERED BY SAMUEL KOFI WOODS, II, INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER, MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS, REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY IN DEN HAAG, NETHERLANDS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2010
I have decided to wear a black shirt today in mourning of a Dear Friend and Colleague, Floribert Chebeya of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and his driver. Floribert lost his life few months ago under quizzical circumstances. On this day, as we focus on the protection of Human Rights Defenders, we are reminded too well of the extreme risk to which we are all subjected. I have been informed that five policemen should go on trial this month but the circumstances of the driver remain unknown. Floribert’s death is a testimony to the heartless character of repressive governments and their agents.
