Asumana Jabateh-Randolph
March
20....When
President Charles Taylor jailed journalist Hassan Bility and others in
Liberia, the Liberian Mandingo Association of New York (LIMANY) joined
other Liberian organizations from across the US in standing resolute that
the detainees had to be released unconditionally. Under the leadership of
the National Civil Rights Movement, we had a successful peaceful
demonstration last October in Washington, DC. It is clear that our
collective effort was not in vain. Hassan Bility is a free man. The other
falsely accused people, still being held hostage and tortured by the
Liberian president’s security forces, will not be forgotten by LIMANY.
Again, the plight of these innocent Liberians must not be forgotten.

Mandingoes Are Banned From Leaving Gbanga As Other Liberians flee.

The town of Gbarnga, 150
km from Monrovia, is again threatened, with reports that LURD
controls Lofa Bridge and near-by town of Gbalatua. This latest armed
activity has caused the residents of Gbanga to flee for their lives and
the only hospital in the area, Phebe has evacuated most of its staff and
patients. The town was contested last May, with reports of executions and
heavy looting.
The
UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
confirmed “armed activity was also reported to be encircling Bong
County, north of Monrovia. The fighting was reported to be moving rapidly
towards Gbarnga. As fearful people continue to run away from Gbanga, the
Mandingoes are being banned from leaving. "No dingo leaving from
here, if LURD dogs come, they will bite we all." Said Captain Four
Eyes. There are reports of increase arrest of anyone with a Mandingo
name. (return to TOP),

Release-Gedeans Protest Toe Town Massacre
March
17...The Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas strongly condemns the
attack on Toe Town, a border town in Grand Gedeh County which, prior to
the recent attack, was refuge to more than ten thousand Ivorian and other
West Africans fleeing fighting in neighboring Ivory Coast. We condemn the
killing of the relief workers and other civilians as a result of this
cruel incident. There can be no justifiable reason for the killing of
innocent civilians, particularly aid workers who are providing
humanitarian assistance to our people. (return to TOP),

Mosquito B. Indicted for War Crimes, Is Taylor Next?
March
10... Taylor's adopted son in crime from the Sierra Leonean side of the
border, the limb cutting gang leader, Sam Maskita Bockarie, was
indicted on Monday. Sam Bockarie, remains illusive, although many sources
believe that he roams between Liberia and Ivory Coast. Presumably
commanding a drugged Liberian child-fighters of Taylor in the Ivorian
conflict. He was spotted in Toe Town a month ago. Sam has said on many
occasion that Taylor is his adopted father. He would like to make Liberia
his home and do business. Among Taylor's circle of friends, there are
prediction that Sam dead body will be returned to Sierra Leone soon,
putting the blame on a gun battle in Sierra Leone. For the time being,
sources within the ATU say that Maskita is alive and kicking in
Liberia.
In a related story, reports are reaching this media that there is a
planned attack by the pro-government militias against civilians in Nimba
to be blamed on rebel activities in the county. And the reports further
says that Maskita's group has a sealed order to carry out the attack.

the African Youths, Exiled Journalist Delivered "Food for Thought"
By
Sidiki Trawally, March
3... Failed
political policies adopted by African leaders have led to enormous
sufferings of their people, who continue to en masse into other continents
for greener pasture, observed a Liberian journalist.
Hassan Bility noted Africa has been exploited as lots of negative things
continue to happen on the continent. He said the problems in Africa are
the creation of African leaders, who he said have become rulers and not
severance of the people. “It is our responsibility to eradicate those
vices, germs that continue to suffer our continent.”
