Liberian Activist Hassan Bility Presented Amnesty International UK’s Special Award For Human Rights Journalism Under Threat
Hassan Bility, editor of the Analyst newspaper in Liberia received the award in recognition of his bravery in reporting on the deteriorating human rights situation in Liberia. As a result his life was put severely at risk, and Hassan Bility now has refugee status in the USA.

Nvasekie Konneh, the President of the Liberian National Civil Right Movement and a close friend to Mr. Bility said that the Bility family is appreciative of all who continue to work for the rights of all - and most especially for his friends, Aloysius Toe, Mabutu Kromah and other detainees. Human Rights Lawyer, Tiawon Gongloe delightedly exclaimed that he is proud of Bility's unselfish commitment and sacrifice for the people of Liberia.

Varmuyan Kromah Is No More!

Providence, Rhode Island, May 28:-   The sudden death has been announced of veteran Liberian civil servant and  Attorney-at-Law,  Alhaji Varmuyan Kromah. He was  father of former Liberian Finance Minister Lasanah Kromah and Alhaji G.V. Kromah, former Minister of Information and  ex-Vice Chairman of the Council of State. Elder Kromah passed away over the weekend in Macenta, Guinea where he has been living as a refugee since the 1997 national elections in Liberia. He was 79.

MAN IN JAIL CRIES FOR HELP

Sidiki Trawally, May 23....
A man arrested and jailed for allegedly being a dissident of the LURD forces is crying for help as he languishes in prison in deplorable health conditions. "I am dying, I am dying, my people your please help me," cried Mabutu Kromah, who is said to be locked down in one of Charles Taylor's prisons in Liberia. Mabutu's health, family sources said is, "very serious and needs urgent attention."

U.S. urges Americans to leave Liberia, citing spreading conflict...

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - The United States urged Americans to leave the rebellion-torn West African nation of Liberia, citing the spread of fighting. The warning comes as two rebel movements, one newly formed, press in upon President Charles Taylor's government from the north and southeast, with fighting surging ahead of scheduled peace talks.

The NRCM Note of Thanks

There comes a time in a person's life when he or she feels a strong urge to do something that is driven by social conscience. The March on May 8, 2003, was a first for a few of us, but the participants represented a cross-section of Liberia. The ambition to better unite ourselves in future protests is a thriving force, and we will prevail.

Liberia is Life (Part II)

And it came to pass that early on the morning of May 8th, 2003, there arose a multitude. And there were women, men, and children of varied ages; Christians, Muslins, and others, and they represented a cross-section of Liberia. And with deep sorrow in their eyes and hearts, they had traveled from far and near to Washington, D.C., on buses and metros, air and sea, to unite their voices for democratic freedoms.

Our Mission Remains The Same

Ganta, Liberia May 18 - When we decided to enter Nimba, our primary mission was to liberate and rescue the civilians – especially the children. Our mission remains the same. We are facing some difficulties in accomplishing our mission due to the fact the Taylor’s notorious ATU (Al-Queda Terrorist Unit) is using innocent children as human shields. We have rescued several children who were forced to fight for Taylor. We found many of these children with guns but no ammunition and in dire need of food. These cowardice captors of these children have run into the wilderness and are fleeing towards Monrovia for safety

Taylor's regime has failed the Liberian people and has failed those that have risked their lives for him and his “cause.” Today, Liberia remains without fresh water, no electricity, disrepaired roads and few schools. Taylor’s government is under United Nations sanctions for what the UN says is gunrunning and arms trafficking with West Africa's rebel groups. With Taylor, Liberia will not progress and violence will continue to engulf the region. It is time for us to collectively find reason to move forward without Charles Taylor. He is no good for our country.

The above release was submitted to LIMANY's correspondent Ms. Masogbeh Kenneh in Ganta.

Were You There?

James Harris, May 8....."Indeed, this is particularly true, most especially, in a life and death situation like Aloysius’ and the others where we have common interests. In this regard, I’d like to hear from as many Liberians as possible, stating "honestly" why they didn’t you attend the rally. Because tomorrow, the one bothersome question that each of us could be asked is: Were you there? I know, I was!" (PHOTO)

Gonda: Ganta is Safely in LURD's Hand

LURD’s Field Commander, General Gonda in Ganta denies any major fighting or Guinean soldiers have joined forces with LURD in a battle for Ganta. Liberia's Defense Minister said on Monday that there were fierce clashes on Sunday between LURD rebels and Liberian troops in the town of Ganta. He was quoted as said that Guinean soldiers were totally involved to the neck on the side of the rebels

We Showed Up For Aloysius Toe And Others, Why Didn't You?

When Nvasekie N. Konneh and his National Civil Rights Movement (NCRM) teamed up recently with Charles Kwanulo Sunwabe, Jr., and his organization, Freedom and International Justice (FIJ), to plan a mass rally in "shock and awe" about the continued incarceration of Aloysius Toe, undisputedly one of Liberia's most prominent human rights defenders, Sheikh Sackor and others, by the very brutal Taylor regime, there was no doubt in my mind whatsoever that their intention was genuine, clear and honest.

T. Q. Harris Appointed LURD Negotiator

[LURD], therefore, [calls] upon the International Contact Group on Liberia, the Economic Community of West African States, United Nations, European Union, African Union, fellow Liberians, and friends of Liberia to give Mr. Harris your fullest cooperation. He is prepared to articulate LURD's position as it relates to ending hostilities in Liberia

U.S.: Bin Laden behind bombing...
MSNBC  Thu May 15 16:41:00 PDT 2003

U.S. officials identified six countries as likely targets for imminent al-Qaida attacks: Liberia, where the network has been tied to the so-called “blood diamond” trade; Somalia, where post-civil war chaos gives foreign operatives essentially free rein; Indonesia and Malaysia, where radical Muslim Jemaah Islamiyah rebels are believed to have close ties with bin Laden’s network; Saudi Arabia; and Kenya.

Liberia Leader Accused in Family's Death
May 15, 2003

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) - War-crimes prosecutors for Sierra Leone on Thursday accused the president of neighboring Liberia of killing the family of an indicted rebel leader, and suggested it was done to block positive DNA identification of the man.

Liberian President Accused of Al Qaeda Ties

David Crane, the American prosecutor for the Special Court on Sierra Leone, accused Liberian President Charles Taylor yesterday of harboring terrorists and sanctioning their use of the diamond trade to finance their activities.

The National Civil Rights Movement Statement on Conditions in Liberia

Accordingly, we call upon the Monrovia regime, the LURD, and other armed groups to immediately stop the human rights abuses and find a peaceful solution to their differences. We also call upon the Monrovia regime to timely release the following illegally detained Liberians: Aloysius Toe, Ansumana Kamara, Mohammed Dukuly, Bangalee Sheriff, Mohammed Komara, Sheikh Sackor, Mabutu Kromah, and others. Our Moral Responsibility
You make a statement today that the sheer power of the human will and conscience is far greater than weapons of war and structures of power. And I have no doubt that the God of justice; love and kindness will bless your efforts in bringing peace to Liberia. Today, you plant a tiny seed for justice and human rights that will Grow during the next several days and months into giant oaks of liberation and freedom for the Liberian people. (Rev. Napoleon L. Divine)

LURD Claims to be Sitting Comfortably in Palala, Ready to Regain Gbanga

Monrovia, May 13....LURD's commander in Ganta claims that there is no fighting in Ganta as was reported by Taylor. Taylor said that he was in Gbanga and told reporters that there was fierce  fighting still raging between his forces and rebels in the northeastern city of Ganta. But an ATU officers traveling with the President said that the President did not reach Gbanga. Residents in Gbarnga told our correspondence that they could hear heavy weapons fire coming from the direction of Palala. According to UN diplomatic sources, Liberian rebels control between 40 and 60 percent of the country, where LURD launched an insurgency aimed at toppling Taylor in 1999.

In a related story there is mobilization going on in Monrovia of Nimba dissident force to align with LURD or MODEL for an attack on Monrovia. Gios are blaming the Manos for this movement.

Addressing journalists over the weekend at his residence in Monrovia, Taylor said that LURD is being supported by Guinea who provide artillery cover for the dissidents by shelling Ganta. Many in the diplomatic circle believe that Taylor is laying the claims as a reason to one day attack or invade Guinea. He added that the fighting in Ganta was serious, and that Guinea's support for the rebels and the arms embargo were undermining his ability to effectively deal with the situation. But there are reports from sources close to the Ministry of Defense that Taylor had just received fresh consignment of arms, many of which are intended to destabilize Guinea.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council last week extended sanctions, including an arms embargo, originally imposed on Liberia in 2001 to force Taylor's government to stop its support for the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in Sierra Leone.

My Visit To Ganta on Thursday (May 1), Ganta's Market Day
By Masogbeh Kenneh
April 29, 2003

In Ganta, people were moving about their businesses as normally as they could. Many people I talked to told me that they wish the fighting would stop. Ganta was not as damaged as earlier claimed - some buildings are slightly damaged. On the street, there are fearful and armed men patrolling, looking as if they were ready to attack.
